1888 M117 Sporting Times - Doggie Miller
In 1888 and 1889 the Sporting Times weekly newspaper issued these cards. These cabinet sized (approx. 7 1/14 x 4 1/2) cards feature drawings of players in mostly action poses. They came in a variety of pastel colors. The players last name is printed on each of the drawings, as are the words "Courtesy of Sporting Times New York." Twenty-seven different players are known. The Cap Anson is the same rendering as is used in N28 and some of the others are also depicted in the N172 Old Judge series. This particular example of Doggie Milller also happens to be the plate speciman for the 2009 Krause SCD Catalog of Baseball Cards book. In our combined 30 yrs of collecting we have seen less than a half of a dozen of these extremely rare cards for sale. They are so rare most collectors have never seen or held one but Jefferson Burdick knew of them and cataloged them in the American Card Catalog, as M117. An almost once in a lifetime opportunity to grab a card from this elusive set. Don't let it slip by!!
